What to do After a Car Accident
1. Check for Injuries & Get Help
- Check to see if you or your passengers are injured. Call 911 immediately if anyone is hurt.
- Check on the occupants of the other vehicle(s) to see if they are injured. Avoid moving injured people unless there’s an immediate danger. Call 911 immediately if anyone is hurt.
- Understand that anything you say to 911 or the police on scene will probably be recorded.
2. Move to a Safe Location
- If it is safe to do so, move the vehicles to the side of the road/out of hazardous areas.
3. Report the Accident to the Police
- Always call the police to report the accident, even for minor accidents. A police report could provide crucial details for your insurance claim or legal case. You should provide a factual statement but avoid speculation or admitting fault.
- Understand that anything you say to 911 or the police on scene will probably be recorded and can be used in your case (for or against you).
4. Collect Information
- Collect information about all parties involved in the accident. Get names, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, license plate numbers, and insurance information.
- If there are any witnesses, be sure to obtain their contact information as well.
- Take photographs and video of the accident scene. Make sure to get images from all angles. Photograph visible injuries, vehicle damage, road conditions, and anything else that seems important.
- Write down the details about the accident, including the date, time, weather conditions, location, and the events leading up to the collision.
5. Seek Medical Attention
- Even if you feel fine, you should get checked by a medical professional after an accident. Some injuries, such as internal injuries might not be immediately apparent.
- Follow your doctor’s orders for treatment. Be sure to keep all medical records and receipts.
6. Report the Accident to Your Insurance Company
- Contact your insurance company to report the car accident. Everything you say to them is recorded.
- Do not give any recorded statements to any insurance company without speaking to a lawyer first.
- Ask your insurance claims rep about what your policy clovers: rental car, medical expenses, vehicle repairs, and more.
7. Avoid Sharing on Social Media
- Do NOT under any circumstances post any information about your crash or injuries on social media.
7. Consider Legal Advice
- If you have any questions about your rights, dealing with insurance companies, or the insurance claims process, consider consulting with a personal injury attorney. A personal injury attorney can provide guidance to make sure your interests are protected.
- If the other party’s insurance company or legal representative contact you, it may be best to consult an attorney before making any statements or signing any documents.
